Salome Monthe Chemiat is a researcher and educator working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, maternal and neonatal health, and human-centred communication systems. She holds a Master’s degree in Information Technology from Strathmore University, where her research focused on the use of AI-powered, game-based learning to improve maternal health education and awareness, particularly in low-resource settings.
Motivated by the persistent global disparities in maternal and neonatal mortality, Salome’s work addresses how education, accessibility, and trust in health information influence health outcomes. Her early research explored how complex and sensitive maternal health information can be simplified through serious games and AI-driven educational tools, making it more accessible, culturally appropriate, and engaging for diverse populations. This work highlighted the strong correlation between education levels and maternal and neonatal outcomes and demonstrated the potential of AI to support equitable health education.
Building on this foundation, Salome’s current research focuses on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and bio-inspired AI systems for health communication. She is the creator of BeSmaRAG, a bio-inspired, context-aware AI framework designed to improve the reliability, grounding, and cultural relevance of maternal health information. Her research draws inspiration from natural systems such as ant colonies and slime molds to design adaptive, trustworthy AI architectures for high-stakes healthcare contexts.
Salome is passionate about ethical, decolonised, and socially responsible AI, with a strong commitment to ensuring that emerging technologies empower women and communities rather than widen existing inequities. She is actively involved in teaching, mentorship, and interdisciplinary collaboration, and her work has been presented at international conferences in AI, digital health, and educational technology.
