Dr. Marilyn Berchie-Gialamas is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nursing within the School of Community Health and Policy at Morgan State University. She is a board-certified family nurse practitioner with advanced clinical expertise in maternal and child health and extensive experience across academic, clinical, and research settings.
Dr. Berchie-Gialamas’s research focuses on maternal health outcomes, perinatal care delivery, and the role of doulas and community-based support models in pregnancy and postpartum care. Her scholarship incorporates mixed-methods approaches, qualitative research, community-engaged methodologies, and program evaluation to examine care delivery models, workforce development, and clinical training initiatives related to maternal health.
She serves as Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator on multiple federally funded research grants addressing maternal health, clinical education, and workforce training. Her research has been disseminated through peer-reviewed publications, national and regional conference presentations, and professional forums. She collaborates with interdisciplinary academic and community partners to support rigorous study design and translation of research findings into practice and education.
In her academic role, Dr. Berchie-Gialamas teaches undergraduate and graduate nursing courses in maternity nursing, research methods, and clinical reasoning. She is actively engaged in curriculum development, accreditation processes, and academic service, with a focus on aligning nursing education with contemporary practice standards and competencies.
Dr. Berchie-Gialamas is also involved in mentoring students and early-career professionals in research and clinical scholarship. Her professional interests include strengthening maternal health research infrastructure, advancing evidence-based maternity care, and preparing the next generation of nurses to deliver high-quality, family-centered care through education, research, and clinical excellence.
