Maternal morbidity and mortality rates are significant in the U.S. Birth doula support has been shown to reduce negative birth outcomes and increase overall birth satisfaction. Additionally, maternal healthcare provider burnout is growing in prevalence. Compassion may mitigate the effects of burnout. Using constructivist grounded theory, data analysis revealed that compassion sustains doulas, increases their sense of efficacy, and mitigates burnout, in turn, enhancing the maternal experience.
